Historically, healthcare personnel have felt they were sensitive to a patient's needs therefore to the cultural needs of a patient. If you ask someone who is from another culture than the most common in your area, you will hear stories of how people are being treated poorly in the hospitals or a physician's offices. Recently in some areas of the US there has been a proliferation of the Hispanic and Asian patients who are here for work or for family connections.
They often do not able to speak English and are unable to communicate when seeking medical treatment. Some healthcare personnel see this as being a bother or extra work for them to have to seek out a translator for the proper care of these patients.

Translators are needed when medical decisions are made. You cannot rely on family members to make these decisions. In some Asians families, the family does not want to elderly patient to know the extent of their illness. They try to protect the patient and want to make any decisions themselves. There is some ethnics and religious groups who prefer same sex providers to check them in the hospital or office. It is up to us the healthcare personal to know these important rituals.
