Components of Evidence-Based Clinical Decision Making
As it relates to clinical and medical research, EBP entails the incorporation of patients' values, professional medical and clinical expertise, best practices and research evidence into the decision-making process to affect positive patient and clinical outcomes. It is the deliberate, explicit, conscientious, ethical, and judicious use of current best evidence in the practice to make clinical decisions about how best to care for patients and bring about positive outcomes (Sackett, 1996). According to Dr. David Sackett, a pioneer of evidence-based practice (EBP), it is "the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research." (Sackett, 1996)
As such, clinical expertise combines the clinician's skills, experience and education gained overtime. This background when combined with the serious consideration of patients' cultural and health encounters of their unique, personal and different beliefs, concerns, values and expectations; will result in the best quality and strongest foundation for research that is based on research.
