During his research, Meredith Belbin found that each of the behaviors were essential in getting the team successfully from start to finish. The key was balance. Dr. Belbin established that the most successful teams were not those with the highest intellect, but those balanced in Team Roles. Belbin identified nine Team Roles, each of which provided a unique contribution to a team situation.

Belbin's Team Roles Reflection

Team role inventory (TRI) is a theory proposed by psychologist and academic Meredith Belbin whose specialisation is understanding the social dynamics of groupwork, teams and organizations. His 1981 Book (Belbin 1981) presented the fruits of a 7-year interdisciplinary research that combine insights from mathematics, anthropology, psychology and sociology to present an understanding of team building , the roles that are taken up by team members, team behaviours, leadership, the impact of team-size and the environment setting, designing teams, teams in public affairs, etc. This book provided insight on how and why teams succeed and fail and it also provides a self-perception inventory at the end of the book to allow readers to match their own personalities to team roles identified in the book. This 1981 book has become widely read and distributed in management and human resources over the years so that Belbin's work has made an impact in the manner by which present organizations approach and design their organizations and working style.
