First person narrator

I suggested in my assignment that a first person narrator establishes credibility. I feel the problem with this is that most of us have areas where we can't see ourselves clearly, due to lack of self-knowledge, strong emotion, bias, or some other factor. What happens when you have a first person narrator with that sort of (very common) situation?
