A company I worked for was losing money on replacement tires, wheels, and brakes because of the acid the trucks were forced to drive through every day. There was no way to drop off the used batteries without going through the acid, since one reason these batteries were returned was because of leaking. The tires had to be replaced monthly and no tire lasted more than six weeks. Wheels were replaced every six months. The company had tried everything from special covers to drivers being held to a 2 mph minimum in the drop off area to avoid splashing. Brakes systems were replaced with the wheels. There were six smelting plants and each had twenty four trucks. Costs of large tires and wheels were exorbitant.
After working as the fixed asset accountant for several months, I researched the value of the wheels and tires (along with brake parts) together as a single asset unit. It qualified under the rules of a fixed asset, though they were replaced in such a short time. With some help from the management, I was able to establish the three items as two items, tires and wheels/brake parts, as a fixed asset and therefore depreciable under tax laws. The tax savings helped to mitigate the cost of the items each year.
