The Hurricane Katrina disaster was one of the worst disasters in American history. This is despite having the most advanced communication, search and rescue, and engineering competency in the world. The world saw that in spite of having such technological advancements, it was the people, those in charge of helping and recovery, who created the most devastation to the people of Mississippi.
No one was listening. Not to each other, the victims, the people on the ground in the devastated areas. It was a failure of epic proportions that started long before Katrina arrived. A hurricane, a storm surge, a dam that was not properly maintained all contributed to the disaster. Those in control in the past and during the crisis were not communicating effectively and it cost the homes, lives, and livelihood of millions of people.

Most of the communication barriers were power barriers. Different agencies and levels of government trying to oversee the same disaster, using their own methods and processes without concern for other processes made the situation more difficult. There were also issues of class and control involved in the problem. The poorest and the neediest people became trapped, while the flooding occurred in the most poverty stricken area of the region. Miscommunication is the key in these relationships and how they played out.
The state and local government had attempted to get some work done on the dam, but the federal government chose to ignore the problem as long as possible. There was a great deal of misinformation involved and some incomplete information.
The difference in language, especially dialect and terms used, could have contributed to the problem as well. The people in the New Orleans area are not only Southern, but also have a dialect that includes ...
