Determine Maximum Allowable Load

This content was STOLEN from BrainMass.com - View the original, and get the already-completed solution here!

A rigid steel plate is supported by three posts of high-strength concrete each having an effective cross-sectional area A=40,000 mm^2 and Length L=2 m (see attachment). Before the load P is applied, the middle post is shorter than the others by an amount s=1.0 mm.
Determine the maximum allowable load Pallow if the allowable compressive stress in the concrete is equal to 20 MPa.(Use E=30 GPa for concrete)

THE ANSWER SHOULD BE 1.8 MN.

Maximum load P

Please see the attached file.

Three plates are joined with a 12 mm diameter pin as shown. Determine the maximum load P that can be transmitted by the joint if:
a) The maximum normal stress on a cross-section of the plates at the pin must not exceed 400 MPa.
b) The maximum bearing stress between a plate and the pin must not exceed 600 MPa.
c) The maximum shear stress on a cross-section of the pin must not exceed 250 MPa.
d) The punching shear resistance of the material in the top and bottom plates is 350 MPa.
