Generally, the overarching influence on a child's development is his/her environment and this would include the child's family environment and his/her school environment. Within the family environment, the main factors contributing to a child's development are:
1. How the child is nurtured in the family;
2. Where the family lives (i.e. are there access to resources such as community centres, parks/playgrounds, libraries, and such); and,
3. The family's socio-economic status (i.e. the total income of the household and the parents/guardians ability to provide basic needs and any extra-curricular activities). This can also include geographic environment as in the quality of services available in the community with respect to health care and education.
These main factors do not influence a child as independent factors; there exists a "fluid" line between them. ...
