I. Definition and purpose of a literature review

A literature review is an overview of the literature in a specific topic area. It is often used as part of a thesis project in order to familiarize the reader with the literature, to make them an expert in the area so upon completion, the person can step back and summarize the main themes in the literature that pertain to their problem area (Cooper, 1988). In other words, the value of the literature review is that it informs the researcher of what has already been studied in the topic area, as well as what still needs to be addressed. When writing up the review, the studies are selectively chosen in order to build a case for their study, which are grouped together in written format.
