First of all, when offering a summary of three "recent" developments in child development & brain research articles and their impact on the early childhood field, I first want to highlight the notion of "serve and return." Much like a tennis ball during a match, scientists have now acknowledged that the give and take, back and forth relationships between children, their parents, siblings, family members, other caregivers in the family or community, are essential and impactful for fostering healthy child development and brain growth, too. When a baby reach out for interaction through babbling, cooing, facial expressions, and gesturing, adults need to offer timely, emotionally supportive, safe, and responsive with vocalizing and gesturing back at them in order to cultivate the brain's architecture. In contrast, failure to do so in abusive or abandonment contexts can hinder a child's development. Specifically, studies insist how these serve-and-return interactions between a young child and caregiver are "integral to healthy child development and language development" (Reynolds & Burton, 2017).
