Teaching the Microscope

Examining the Instrument physically

Behavioral Objective: The students will memorize the various parts of the microscope to begin learning the subject of biology and understanding life from the smallest to largest entity.

Cognitive domain: The students will learn to operate the microscope learning how all the parts work together, as well as making slides, as in the kinds of mounts, smears, and permanent slides.

Affective domain: The students will begin to see how the microscope will fit in with the study of biology and other subjects.

Psychomotor domain: The students will show how to use the microscope and make the various kinds of slides for the microscope.

(Teacher may want to teach the microscope lesson before beginning chapters.)

(Teacher will make a handout of the picture of microscope and have the students label the microscope and then have the students memorize the diagram for a quiz.)

What is the microscope? The microscope is a rugged instrument that is an optical instrument that must be understood to be able to use and care for it for the microscope is also very sensitive and expensive.

The Parts of the Microscope

The microscope is mounted on a weighted base that gives it stability. There is an upper and lower part that is attached to a base. Upper parts can be tilted as some prefer to do for more comfort in viewing slides. (Teacher can have students try this to see if they like it that way.)
The eyepiece is the part that we look through at the slides and observing wet mount specimens. Do not tilt the microscope too far through.
(Teacher should demonstrate how to carry the microscope.) The microscope should be kept covered to keep dust from the optical lenses (systems). (Show the students how to physically handle the microscope (carry) in an upright-one hand grasping the arm and other the other under the base.) (Have the students demonstrate this also finding the arm and the base of the actual microscope.)

Ocular lens system- near the eyepiece there are several lenses mounted in a tube - could be removed if given permission by teacher.

Objective lens system- low and high power and some have a third, which is a very high power.
