In assessing what I want my students to know by the end of that one class, I would want to get a quick assessment of what they already know before walking in. There is no sense structuring a lesson to teach something that the students already know. Thus, because I only have that one lesson, I don't have time to go through the formalities of giving and grading a formal pre-test. Therefore, my assessment needs to be quick.
