There are several ways in which assessment is used throughout manufacturing and production. It can be used in training, risk assessment and technology assessment. I will cover all three of these types of assessments to give you a better idea of how it is used and what the benefits and advantages are to assessing in this field.

Training Assessment: According to http://www.selectinternational.com/assessments/in-depth-assessments/select-assessment-for/manufacturing.html training and pre-employment assessment are beneficial in a number of ways. It can decrease employee theft rates, decrease in drug use and decrease in turn over. It can also increase work pace, productivity and quality of work.

Lean Manufacturing Assessment: Is a type of assessment in which assessors determine the needs of the plants visited. They conduct interviews via phone as well as in person. They meet with senior management members and walk the process. They are there several days and visit with employees and walk to floor. Once the assessment is finished, the assessor makes suggestions as to improvements and make a detailed list that may include SMED Implementation, Workplace Organization 5S, (all applicable Lean Tools,) and their level of proficiency, acceptance, and implementation etc. This is followed by recommendations regarding the 'tools' of Lean, and where further attention is warranted and in what sequence. The goal of these visits is to identify opportunities for improvement and suggest a sequence and process to addressing them in order to achieve maximum results, in the shortest amount of time, while consuming the least amount of resources possible.
