THEORETICAL VIEW:
We first take the theoretical perspective of Erikson. According to him children in the middle childhood are in the Industry vs. inferiority stage. In the middle childhood the aim is to bring a productive situation to completion gradually. The failure to master trust, autonomy, and industrious skills, cause the children to doubt their future. The middle childhood is viewed by Erikson as critical for development of self confidence(1). According to Erikson if children are encouraged to make and do things and are praised for their accomplishments they demonstrate industry by being diligent. According to Erikson children having difficulties with peers or school may develop a sense of inferiority.
If we take the theoretical perspective of Freud, children in the middle childhood are in the latency phase. The latency phase may begin between the ages 3 and 7 and may continue till puberty between the ages 8 and 15. This stage is described by Freud as relatively stable phase. This phase originates during the phallic stage when the child's Oedipus complex begins to dissolve (2). According to Freud the energy the child previously put into Oedipal problem can be used for developing the self.
