An SEP that a regulated entity has undertaken in lieu of other penalties is the funding of projects valued at $500,000 to settle a penalty stemming from sewage discharges that occurred between 2001 and 2007. A Supplemental Environmental Project is an environmentally beneficial project that a violator agrees to perform as a part of a settlement of enforcement action. In return, the EPA reduces the cash penalty that the violator would have to pay. As a part of a settlement, a violator may agree to undertake an environmentally beneficial project related to the violation in exchange for a reduction of penalty to be paid.
