However, concurrent with the cities name and fame is the ever increasing environmental problems such as air pollution and water shortages. Foremost to this is the "infamous L.A. smog" which "was sighted by farmers as early as 1940" ("Environment - Los Angeles," n.d.).
The city was named by the Chumash tribe of Native Americans to mean "the valley of smoke" (MacDonald) "because of the smog from native campfires" ("Los Angeles," n.d.).
