    JDBC and ODBC

The purpose of this 3 page paper is to discuss JDBC with interfacing to

    ODBC.

JDBC is a Java API (Application Programming Interface) that documents a

standard framework for dealing with tabular and, generally, relational data

A database is essentially a smart container for tables.

A table is a container comprised of rows.

A row is (conceptually) a container comprised of columns.

A column is a single data item having a name, type, and value.

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity), a C-based interface to SQL-based

database engines, provides a consistent interface for communicating with a

database and for accessing database metadata

    Problem:

The purpose of this 3 page paper is to discuss JDBC with interfacing to ODBC.

A database is essentially a smart container for tables.

A table is a container comprised of rows.

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity), a C-based interface to SQL-based

database engines, provides a consistent interface for communicating with a

database and for accessing database metadata

    Solution:

"Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) is a widely accepted Application Programming Interface (API) for database access. It's based on the Call-Level Interface (CLI) specifications from X/Open and ISO/IEC for database API's, and uses Structured Query Language (SQL) as its database access language" (Microsoft.com, 2007).

ODBC was created to provide a uniform method of access to heterogeneous, database management systems. The ODBC architecture has four components:

    • Application performs processing and calls ODBC functions to submit SQL statements and retrieve results.
    • Driver Manager Loads and unloads drivers on behalf of an application. ...
