A "Listener" as name depicts is an object/class/server that listens. It is a named process which runs on the Oracle Server.
2. How does it work?
It listens to requests from clients to connect to the Instance. In Oracle, the name of this listener is by default Listener. Like any other listener, it listens for connection request on a particular port. Normally the port number assigned to it is 1521.
