Denial of service attack is an attack in which attempt is made by hackers deny access to legitimate users of the system or network. Hackers make Dos attacks to interrupt the availability of the system or network. A common example of DOS attack is to flood the target system or network with external communication requests. The sudden increase in such external communication requests from unwanted or illegitimate users depletes the resources of the system or network and causes it to become slow or become unavailable for legitimate users.

Another example of DOS attack is lockout of the legitimate user using authentication controls. Hackers can misuse the authentication features by entering wrong passwords several times and thus, causing the authentication control system to limit the attempts and locking out the user.
