    In electrolytic refinement of copper, impurities from the recovered copper from ores are reduced. The copper with impurities is an anode in an electrolyte bath of sulfuric acid and copper (II) sulfate. The cathode used is a pure copper material. When current is passed through the circuit solution, the copper atoms on the anode will be dissolved in the solution, thus forming copper ions. The positive copper ions will be attracted to the negative cathode, which is the pure copper, and will form neutral copper atoms. As current continues to pass through, more copper ions will be attracted and more pure copper will be produced. The impurities will be left behind because they don't easily dissolve in the solution, unlike the copper ions. So they can be filtered out of the solution and can be scraped up afterward.

    Economically, purifying copper is more cost efficient than using impure copper. Impure copper has less conductivity, resulting in greater resistance. Longer copper wires that are impure will dissipate more power during transmission of electricity, and thus greater loss and higher electricity bill will be experienced. Cost of electricity will increase in the longer run. With purified copper, very little resistance will be measured, and thus it becomes a good medium of power transmission.
