The company I work for is an advocacy organization for the disabled. We work within the laws of the federal government and state governments when dealing with providers, caregivers, nurses, and programs. We also work for the Vocational Rehabilitation. As a for profit agency among not for profits, we have some advantages and some disadvantages. We are not eligible for many grants, but we can provide services would be the main two. We work and are fully committed to a cause of independent living and employment for all disabled people who want to live independent and not in group homes or who want real jobs paying real wages. The economic environment only impacts us when the governments cut funding for programs.
The company I am comparing ours to, is a not for profit group home. They provide living support and jobs, but the living supports are in a group setting with little independence. The work is in sheltered workshops where the clients make as little as .65 per hour. This is legal and the experience is not as transferable as the public has been led to believe.
Our management and other issues are based on the ability to get grants and funding through the programs in place for the disabled. Fortunately, laws for the disabled have improved and there came with those laws, mandates that are funded. Our management team is a partnership and an operations manager who make all the decisions and who have set up operations based on the different areas we provide services. The ability to be flexible and change when needed is part of the business and we strive to remain fluid for our clients who vary as much as any other diverse population.
The Group Home also is funded through grants, but they have a board of directors and their leadership is an executive officer and a development manager. They are hampered in many ways by the board who must have a say in all expenditures due to the nature of the fundraising and grants received. They support many people, approximately ...
