The reasons why organizations use group brainstorming is that the group method is perceived to be more democratic and one that considers the joint opinion of the participants; In addition the organizations feel that group brainstorming leads to more creative ideas and encourages thinking outside the boxes. In case the group is diverse there is an amalgam of different perspectives and this helps decision making. Organizations believe that group brainstorming leads to more innovation, productivity, and development. It also draws from the experience of people. The ideas get filtered and assessed within the group and only the best reach the organization.
The advantages of individual brainstorming are that it provides you with freedom to express ideas without fear of criticism. An individual that is hesitant in bringing up ideas in a group feels free to bring up the idea during individual brainstorming. The individual has full freedom to control the brainstorming process.
The disadvantages of individual brainstorming are that the process disregards the experience of others in the development of ideas. Others believe that individually generated idea is not good, it does not have support of others in the group, and others reject the idea because it is perceived as a threat to their position. ...
