Let's talk about GM, one of the worlds biggest auto manufacturer's reverse logistics and remanufacturing operations. The company drives its business results by manufacturing innovative vehicles with high performance standards and materials recovery solutions of parts under warranty in order to reduce costs and boost its customer satisfaction. GM is one of the first major companies to recognize the need to fuel improvements by revving up the reverse logistics of materials recovery. Engineers monitor the trends of warranty parts repairs in order to make decisions about parts requiring analysis. GM factories receive parts from approximately 9,000 dealers in the United States, Canada and other countries. In the past these dealers had to package the parts, address them to the designated supplier at one of more than 200 locations, take them to a post office and pay the shipping costs up-front. These processes required the company to call the dealers many times to determine if they had shipped the parts, and then contact the suppliers to verify the parts had been received. These operations were very costly and there wasn't much flexibility and accountability.
