When stress levels are high, employees begin to have health problems and issues with emotional well-being. These can lead to problems with both personal and professional behaviors.

Health issues include catching colds or having headaches. People who are under a lot of stress do not always eat well. This leads to weight loss or weight gain and those can lead to other health issues. Stress can affect other illnesses like arthritis and migraine headaches. It can make diseases and illnesses worse. Cancer in some patients has been linked to stress. Heart attacks and strokes have also been linked to stress.

When people are under a lot of stress or when they are sick, they do not come to work. When they are at work their problems, focus on their personal problems take precedence over work and work problems. People stay home and other people must jump in and do their work, creating more stress for others. Production falls, performance is down, and mistakes are made. Production mistakes can affect the quality of the product and the customer is then involved in the stress issue. Dependent on the industry, a product problem can be stressful for the people involved in the company, the company, and the customer. People already worry about the quality of products, foods, medicines, and other things.

Companies can counter stress, using methods that encourage healthful eating, such as providing healthy snacks in break rooms and food areas. Opening up lines of communication for employees to offer ideas and solutions to problems, making them more proactive in the workplace. Giving ownership of the job to the individuals doing the work, to make changes to the way the job is performed or to suggest improvements also make employees less dependent on managers to solve problems. Offering time off, more or longer breaks, providing things that lower stress like music and television in the break rooms can all help lower stress.
