The question of whether or not the U.S. should continue the use of capital punishment (CP) is one that provokes mixed reactions and rationale. Based upon the justifications for CP both the proponent and the opposing voice can be heard in the clamoring crowd of personal opinions and emotional responses.

One of the justifications for CP is deterrence. Based upon this theory the threat of receiving like punishment will deter an individual from actually crossing that moral and legal line of taking another's life (or any other capital offense). But there are statistics that indicate no difference or even higher murder rates in regions where the CP is still used.

There is also the justification of removing a dangerous individual from civilized society. Many generations ago, keeping a prisoner for their entire lifetime was basically unheard of. Facilities were not available that could support the idea so the death penalty was utilized for a much broader scope of crimes.
