One of the advantages of using seniority as the basis for layoffs is that this methodology gives an organization's management staff a criteria by which to base their decisions as to which employees will be laid off. In addition, this methodology can be used by individuals within an organization charged with making the decision as to which employees would be laid off, as the methodology by which to ensure that the organization suffers as little as possible from the detrimental effects of a reduction in staff.
