Quality is a quite a complicated term; different dictionary definitions exist for the word. When applied, we see that there are many different applications and situational definitions for the term. Quality experts define quality in different ways. One such expert, Harvard professor David Garvin, attempted to bring the definitions of quality together in 1984 by proposing five different definitions for quality:

Transcendent definition: Refers to relative quality, looking at the quality of something in comparison to others.
