    Initiation is a process that occurs at the very beginning of a project. This is when stakeholders decide to acknowledge a need for a project. An example would be when a company reviews its existing IT infrastructure and finds a need to upgrade the infrastructure for implementing advanced software applications.

    Planning is the process that will formulate project goals and objectives. Planning includes the most processes of all the project management process groups. Documentation developed during the planning process is critical to the executing, controlling & monitoring, and closing process groups. Planning is very important because it has effects on all the other areas of project management and include budget reviews, activity definitions, project scope, schedule development, risk ID, Staffing, procurement planning, etc.
