    Initiation is a process that occurs at the very beginning of a project. This is when stakeholders decide to acknowledge a need for a project. An example would be when a company reviews its existing IT infrastructure and finds a need to upgrade the infrastructure for implementing advanced software applications.

    Planning is the process that will formulate project goals and objectives. Planning includes the most processes of all the project management process groups. Documentation developed during the planning process is critical to the executing, controlling & monitoring, and closing process groups.
