Here are the various scales:
Nominal: This is when the categories have no numerical representation. The nominal scale does not express any values or relationships between variables. For example:
What is your favorite ice cream? The answers are words like: chocolate, vanilla...
The information provide is categorical. Though you can't compute statistics on the data, it still yields valuable information from a categorical point of view.
Ordinal: This is when the data is ranked. For example:
