One skill of an effective public administrator is the ability to research and inform about issues, events, and instances occurring at public institutions. With that in mind, it is important to be able to practice various skills, which allow you to improve on a professional level. One important skill is the ability to effectively interpret issues, events, and instances.

Search for a local issue in your area, and use that issue to identify and describe each stage of the policymaking process.

As a public administrator, it is important to acknowledge and to be able to operate within an organizational culture. Not all cultures are willing to accept or adopt certain policies. A public administrator can identify these cultures and work toward a resolution.

Think about a current or recent organization you witnessed (i.e., employment, memberships, etc.). Describe the organization and what it is, and describe the culture of that organization in one word. Then, briefly explain that one-word description. In your response, include, and explain why, one example of a policy that would NOT be accepted well and one example of a policy that would be accepted well.

One of the major issues has been the logo for the events surrounding the anniversary. The city first decided to create the logo through a vote by the board. The city requested proposals for the logo in the form of drawings and pictures. From these, city staff would choose the top three entries based on criteria based on the city, its history, the state's input, and overall commercial value. The criteria were drawn up and approved by the commission in an informal workshop.
