Nike, Inc. is a popular company of the US that deals in sports wear and equipment supplies. The company has its headquarters in the Portland area of Oregon, near Beaverton. It supplies athletic shoes and apparels all over the world. The company had revenue in surplus of $16 billion USD in 2007. According to the 2008 data, the company employs around 30,000 people from all over the world. Nike has spread its business all over the world and it has its offices in around 45 countries outside the US. A wide variety of sports equipment is produced by the company. The company follows an effective marketing strategy and deals in well designed and expensive products. It follows the advertising slogan: "Just do it" to attract the customers and increase its sales (Nike Inc., 2008).
The process in the Nike Inc. that needs improvement is the labor and factory conditions at the production locations. The conditions are really bad and need a lot of improvement and changes to be done. The company also needs to abolish the practice of child labor. The company is not properly able to meet the US labor standards. This has resulted in poor publicity and decline in sales as consumers want socially responsible companies in the society. The company has many other policies which are framed and established well at many locations but it has failed to implement successful labor policies at locations across the world and does not even comply with the minimum labor standards.
It does not give the wages according to the standard wage rates. The company also indulges in sweatshops i.e. factory where workers do piecework for poor pay and are prevented from forming unions. Sweatshops are common in the clothing companies. In case of foreign operations, the company pays unjust wages to the workers and is involved in underage employment. The company also portrays poor work environments for workers in many of its foreign operations.
