The Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) Theory of leadership is different from the other theories and approaches you have studied so far. You have studied approaches and theories that focus on the leader. You have also studied approaches and theories that focus on the context or situation between the leader and the subordinate. LMX Theory sees leadership as a process that focuses on the interactions between leaders and subordinates.

Transformational Leadership is different again, in that it studies leaders who are able to inspire subordinates to accomplish great things. Transformational leaders are seen as leaders who create a clear and shared vision, who empower subordinates to meet high standards, develop trust, and are change agents.

In reference to the dyadic relationship that exists in LMX theory, it is placated upon the theory that leaders' and the relationships they develop with their subordinates and team members can be a contributor to success if these relationships are positive and healthy or could result in dysfunction and limit employee growth if these relationships are not positive and unhealthy. There exists a vertical dyadic linkage between leaders and team members wherein the leader is either a facilitator of positive relationships that allow employees to grow or facilitates an environment that withholds employee growth. This theory focuses on four set principles that include role-taking, which is the first stage wherein the manager under the LMX theory assesses any new member to ascertain their skillset and ability to produce and perform. The manager expects hard work, loyalty to the team and manager, and a trustworthy demeanor from the new team member during this stage.
