Introduction

The world of research & development and to a larger extent technology, from all evidence gathered, has certainly evolved over the last 40 years. Gone are the days when according to Smith (2002), "many large corporations established beautiful research laboratories at locations remote from their headquarters and manufacturing facilities. The aim of these corporations back in the 1950's and 1960's was, "to collect brilliant scientists and allow them to study relevant topics in an environment unhindered by day-to-day business concerns. The director of the laboratory was often a corporate vice president who did not participate in decisions regarding corporate strategy and direction. Instead, his responsibilities were to attract the best scientists, explore new ideas, and publish respected research papers." Much of this has changed however, since from as early as the 1980's corporations realized that it was necessary to have a technologists or a scientists who could not only just formulate new ideas but who could also translate technological capabilities into strategic business decisions. This person is referred to as the, "Chief Technology Officer (CTO)."
In this report, efforts will be made to look at the role of the CTO back then in earlier years, and now in the 21st century. The importance of CTOs' roles will also be examined to determine its implications for management. Recommendations will then ...
