There are several benefits of utilizing graphic design or visual elements in a technical document. These elements not only complement to the existing design of a technical document, but also facilitate better communication with the user.

In my opinion, there are three types of graphic or visual communication that can be added to technical communication:

a) Animation: Animation is the creation of moving pictures which can bring an object to life. In many respects it is similar to video except we need to create the individual frames using media rather than taking a film of an object directly.

John Lassiter of Disney who went on to lead Pixar films summarized these in a scientific paper. He defined principles for good animation. The key ones are listed below (John Lassiter, 1987):

i) Squash and Stretch: This is used to define the rigidity and mass of an object. E.g. A soft object squashes more than a cannon ball

ii) Timing: Space the actions to suit the object. E.g. Giants move more slowly

iii) Anticipation: Preparation for action should build suspense
