Many of the emerging leadership theories focus on employ empowerment; for example, increasing the control the individual has, allowing participation to take an active role in decision-making and goal setting, etc. (Houghton & Yoho, 2005). Many of the current theories of leadership also focus on flexibility and adaptability (Yukl & Mahsud, 2010). The common thread among many current leadership theories is the focus developing the follower and on flexibility on the part of the leader. Each emerging theory differs in the focus on what is important. For instance, is it more important to empower, motivate, and inspire followers or is it more important to adapt leadership style to fit the context of the situation? What focus is most effective? It depends on the research study or theory you are reviewing. Each scholar will offer some evidence why their theory is the most effective. What remains certain is that there is not one leadership theory that clearly covers all the complexities of the leadership phenomenon. Some theories are more effective for promoting motivation, some for increasing commitment to organizational goals, and yet others for readily recognizing changing environmental demands faced by the organization.
