Fielder's leadership theory is referred to as Contingency Theory, which was a refinement of the situational viewpoint. It focuses on identifying the situational variables which best predict the most appropriate or effective leadership style to fit the particular situation and circumstance. 1. Task structure: Is the job highly structured, fairly unstructured, or somewhere in between?
For instance, leaders "in a highly routine (mechanistic) environment where repetitive tasks are the norm, a relatively directive leadership style may result in the best performance, however, in a dynamic environment a more flexible, participative style may be required."
