What is charismatic leadership?

Charismatic leadership is based on the idea of leaders who are skilled communicators, able to reach others at a deep level that inspires them to become engaged in the leader's vision. Charismatic leaders are able to project their vision in a manner that reaches others and encourages them to follow, in the process of being motivated by the leader and his or her vision. Frequently cited charismatic leaders include Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, J.F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Charismatic leaders are frequently in politics and religion, but may also be in business (consider Richard Branson of Virgin). They may also be cult leaders, able to get others to do things despite the logic of the idea. It is through the force of the leader's personality that others feel inspired. Charismatic leaders have the ability to "establish personal and moral credibility and then rouse followers' emotions and passions" (Antonakis, Fenley, & Liechti, n.d). A charismatic leader inspires others to take action, because group members tend to accept the leader without question, and willingly obey the leader.
