Cultural Differences for students entering Renmin University

Whenever a student moves from his home country to study in a different country he or she is expected to experience a cultural shock. It is due to the fact that every country has its own language, behavior, ideas and ways of thinking. In particular, the research involves different cultural aspects of Renmin University in Beijing, China.
? Cultural Factors: Chinese are relationship oriented. They like to think in the shades of grey rather than in white or black. In a discussion even after several hours there could be no direction. Different cultural factors can be summarized as below:
? Everything in China happens slowly.

? Social Factors:
? Collectivism: Chinese are group focused. In the classroom of Renmin University it is expected that there are desk mates. Students from other parts of the world may rebel against being tied to another desk. Chinese would have a small number of close and lifelong friends. In contrast western world students would have a large set of friends which change over time.
Married students are not permitted in college except in graduate schools. No married housing or dormitory is provided. Women can visit men's room but no man is allowed to visit women's. In many schools water and electricity is cut off at a certain time in the night until early morning.

Social Relationships: Chinese relationships are more formal and hierarchical; they feel more comfortable in a hierarchical set up where they know their position and the custom and rules for behavior in the situation. In contrast students from United States would be more comfortable with their social equals.
? Language: Unlike in most other developed and developing countries Chinese communicate in their local language. This can be a barrier for effective communication for foreign students.
? Political Factors: In education system, political indoctrination has been incorporated in the curricula. For example, all university students must take several political inculcation classes such as "General Introduction to Mao Zedong's Thoughts." All university freshmen are also expected to participate in military training program in which they are taught different behaviors.
