The four types of control mechanisms that Walt Disney uses:

1. Budgetary - Disney has led the world in its ability to appropriately budget money to allow for profitability and build success for the organization and increase profitability for its shareholders. Disney makes all efforts to ensure that their brand is marketed in the most efficient way possible and this is shown in its marketing strategy which shows Disney is everywhere, on TV, radio, t-shirts, household items, and movies. Disney emphasizes budget on the R&D of the Imagineering group and even if many financial constraints for the production departments were stated, management is very protective of creative efforts in the concept-generation phase of a project. Michael Eisner made several changes to improve the performance of the Studios since he believed that creativity should compensate for dollars and not the other way around. New leadership, maintenance of rigid cost control and encouragement of the pursuit of brilliant scripts and emerging actors were done. In addition to these, the studios would share the financial costs of producing movies by offering shares I limited partnerships. These decisions paid off and gave them profit gain from 1% to 15% from 1984 to 1987.

2. Financial - The financial health of Disney depends on the ability of the company to reap the rewards inherent in its operations and on how effective it can churn out profits from a powerful entertainment machine. In 2000, its finances have improved due to the success of the ABC Network and ESPN, parks and resorts. During the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. Disney's financial situation was immediately impacted but in reaction to troubled times, Disney implemented cost-cutting measures such as decreasing operations at Disney parks; minimizing internet operations; and cutting its annual investment in live-action films.
