STEP 1
- What's a discontinuous innovation and how communities respond to discontinuous innovation?
Discontinuous innovation refers to a new product. A concept that has not been seen or experienced by a customer and requires him to learn using the product with help of new information; typically the customer requires to make a search for information relevant to the new product. Discontinuous innovation can be made through different methods, one is to import distant knowledge to solve customer problem. For example, laser technology is imported into medical surgery. There can be creative destruction, that is there can be a radical change to an existing product or there can be incremental innovations that would result in discontinuous innovation.

When there is a widespread use of the new technology there may be unexpected issues that may change the way other products are used. For instance as the proliferation of information technology took place new issues relating to privacy, piracy and copyrights came up. Once the community evaluates the information about the discontinuous innovation, it embraces the new product and the innovation becomes a status symbol. After the price of the new product comes down and it becomes commonly available the technology is widely accepted.
