The five component model has hardware, software, data, procedures, and people as the components According to the model the hardware and people are the actors, the software and procedures are instructions and the data is the bridge. According to the model the hardware and software are the computer side, and the procedures with people are the human side(1). According to the model, automation moves work from human side to computer side. Also, according to the model moving from the computer side to human side, there is increasing degree of difficulty of change.

Each component is important for an organization to understand: Hardware is important to understand because it represents capital investment. In case of hardware there is a central processing unit, random memory, and storage hardware. There are also several computers linked together by telecommunications hardware. Hand held devices are also included in the hardware.

Software is important to organizations because it completes the functionality of the computer system. It defines the functionality of hardware and can be changed without replacing hardware. Software includes operating system, client applications, programs that coordinate communications among the computers, and those programs that communicate to enable the logistics of the company(2).

Data is important for an organization to understand because for an organization to be successful, data must be accurate, transmitted easily where required, can be stored by computers, and processed with speed. Data refers to recorded facts or figures. In an organization millions of characters of data is stored about customers, products, shipments, and other facts.
