Motivation can be defined as an internal state of mind that stimulates people to behave in a different way to accomplish a particular goal and purpose. Motivation provides an extraordinary energy to the people to achieve a particular goal.

The most important theory of motivation is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs laid down by Abraham H.
Maslow. According to this theory, there are five needs of every people on the earth physiological needs, safety/security needs, social needs, esteem or self respect needs and the self actualization needs. According to Maslow, these needs are natural trend in human behavior and he/she becomes aware and motivated with each of these needs in an ascending order.

The central theory of stress suggests that stress is a negative as well as a phenomenon in a human behavior that if positive can bring the best out of the people or if negative will have a negative impact not only on the particular person but also the organization he/she is associated with.

A high level of motivation without negative stress can only be ensured if the goal given to the employees is achievable. An employee will be highly motivated without negative stress when he knows that the goal give to him is a bit hard but achievable. The MBO technique where the goals are being set by the mix of management and employees is a better example where the employees are motivated to achieve the goal.
