When students see there are few positions in a field, the student might change his or her major to a major that has job opportunities. Trends in positions shift by decade. In the 1960s and 1970s secretarial positions were prominent in the marketplace. Today, most managers handle their own calendars and typing and the need for such a position have significantly been lowered. This is no different from engineering trends.

When demand is high, supply is generally low. When supply is high, demand is generally low. The more engineers available, the less costly it will be for the company to obtain an engineer. The fewer engineers available, the more costly it will be for the company to obtain an engineer.
