It is my responsibility to select an ethics officer for my organization; I will select a person who is honest, upright, and truthful. He must have some knowledge of law and experience as an ethics officer would be very valuable. The educational qualification is MBA degree with courses that cove corporate ethics and responsibility. In addition the persons should have a strong sense of right and wrong and should consider the view of all stakeholders. I would not be interested in such a position as my field of concentration is marketing. Those who have specialized in corporate ethics are better suited for the job.

The advantages of having an ethics office report to the chief executive are autonomy, reporting to legal department is compliance with legal requirements, to the human resources is that ethics of the person will be considered in recruitment, promotion, and training, and audit department means improved ethics and transparency in the accounts department.

The disadvantages are in case of CEO, the ethics officer may only consider issues important to the CEO, the legal department means a focus on legal issues only, human resources would mean focus on the employees, and audit department would mean excessive concentration on the accounts aspect of ethics. In other words the reporting relationship can affect the role of the ethics office in major way.
