Each of the cases is related because it pertains to discrimination in the workplace. The four cases are each related to the rights of employees. Each of these cases argues on the basis of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Further, each case has strengthened the rights of the disadvantaged class of people. Two related to discrimination against women, one is on disparate impact against African Americans, and one is related to affirmative action in favor of black employees. In each of these cases the main law argued was Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. These cases define the intent and the importance of the act. Each is significant because it clarified important issues. For example, Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson clarifies that sexual harassment is a form of sexual discrimination.

We first consider Griggs v. Duke Power Company. The significance of this case is that it relates to how in a subtle manner discrimination against minorities is practiced by employers. Duke Power Company had an inside transfer policy that required employees who wanted to work in higher positions to register a minimum score on two aptitude tests in addition to having a high school education. Griggs was an African-American who filed a class action suit on behalf of several fellow African-American employees against the employer Duke Power Company. This was a suit under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The claim was dismissed by the district court, and the court of appeals found no discrimination. The US Supreme Court took up this case. The issue was to determine if Duke's intradepartmental transfer policy requiring high school education and achievement of minimum scores on two separate aptitude tests a violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The Supreme Court held that there was a violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
