The first step in the structured decision making approach is problem identification. In our scenario, the problem is to select and implement an effective ERP system, either via developing a customized solution by deploying in house or contract software developers, or buying on the shelf/ ready made solution.

It is essential at this stage that organizational members are well informed and clarified about the problem or issue in hand, so that a quality decision can be taken. In our scenario, it is essential that decision makers are well aware of their needs regarding the functioning of the ERP system and are able to define their requirements in a clear manner.

The second step in the decision making approach is identification of alternatives. The decision makers will brainstorm to identify various alternatives. For example, in our scenario, they will identify alternatives such as developing the system in house by utilizing in house talent, or hiring contract software professionals to develop customized solution, or to buy a ready made ...
