Low cost strategy comes from exploiting the economies of scale. Typically, the company must be big and think big. It should develop strong buyer power in relationship with its competitors. Organizations can use this strategy to achieve sustained competitive advantage through efficiency. The company is able to maintain its competitive advantage through mass production, mass distribution and economies of scale. New entrants will not be able to match the scale of operations of a well-entrenched competitor. For example, Wal-Mart is showing positive results even in a weak economy.
Differentiation means creating and sustaining competitive advantage through making of product or service that is unique. This competitive advantage can be sustained because the company earns higher profits and so can afford to invest in innovations. The innovations may be new products or new features in existing products that sustain the differentiation in the market.
Niche marketing focuses on a selected segment. If the segment is narrow, a company can sustain its competitive advantage because its innovations and brand are targeted at the niche. The company is able to sustain competitive advantage by selecting the niche so that competition is weak, there are few substitutes, and the company develops a deep understanding of the needs ...
