Author in this article explains the self determination theory and its relevance to theories of organizational behavior. The article also includes cognitive evaluation theory which reflects the effects of extrinsic motivators on intrinsic motivation. The research study in this article also infers that use of salient extrinsic rewards have negative consequences on citizenship behavior, performance, etc. The research also indicates that intrinsic and autonomous extrinsic motivations are related to satisfaction, performance, trust and well being in the workplace. The author also attempts that many researchers have the point view that cognitive evaluation theory is less useful in the workplace as compared to self determination theory.
