Discuss the differences between a functional and a divisional organization

The primary building block for many business organizations starts with a functional structure. The structure is based with a central office that oversees or manages a variety of departments and major functions needed to run the organization. The functional structure can be viewed as structured and organizations using the functional structure are easy to map.

Divisional structured organizations, like the functional structure, has a central office with various divisions beneath that are dedicated to producing and/or selling a specific type of product or business. The various divisions are dedicated to making their own product and have a functional structure on their own. The divisions keep the functional structure in house (such as human resources) with each division reporting to the central office.
