Why should any company be responsible for others?

Why should any company be responsible for others? Shouldn't they simply take care of their own actions, team members, customers, suppliers etc? The homeless or "hungry" in America (or anywhere else for that matter) aren't their customers, so why are they considered the company's "responsibility?"
